Week 5

 1. I think the best way to learn is not only one. I think it depends on person. There are a lot of ways to learn best. For me, the best way is memorizing. I am good at memorizing. Since when I was young, every exam, I had memorized almost everything from text or note. However, this way is for me. For example, my friend is different. The good way for her is just studying. She often read book and study. As for learning language, I think it is different. The most important thing to study is speaking. Also, practice. Practice is most efficient way to study and improve my skill.

                                   

2. I think difference between strategy and skill is process and technic. Strategy is a plan of actions for achievement something. Strategy is the base of learning. We know how to process. On the other hand, skill is ability to do something. We know how to use effectively. I think that strategy is the first and skill is second. We can get some skills after we know strategies. I think these two things are similar but different. The similarity is that these two things are both important. Two things are important for studying. For example, when we study reading, strategy is how to read the context. Skill for reading is scanning, skimming and so on. If we understand strategy and skill, we will be god at reading.

Week ３

1.  New things that you learnt from any of your HELP classes is that in reading class, I did the reading circle. It is that I found an article that I want to and I made a vocabluary list, comprehenshion questions and discussion quesions. I realized that to make a hand out or questions are difficult. It also takes a long time. To prepare handout for someone is hard. Teachers always prepare handout for us, so I thanks for it.  In addition, I learned one more thing. It is that a difference between paraphrase and summary. Summary is that much shorter and only includes the main idea and important ideas. On the other hand, paraphrase is alost same meaning but we use other word. Paraphrase is little difficult because I have to change and find synonyms and write in own words but I can't change meaning of the original text. That's why it is difficult. Japanese have also like paraphrase. When we write some reports, we quote someone's idea. When we use someone's idea , we also have to write own words. I think it is difficult even Japanese. However this skill is very important, so I have to practice.



2.  New things that you learnt outside of HELP is about  body ontact.  I talked with Subin about body contact. She said to me that I thought Japanese  don't like skinship( body contact) but it was wrong. Since I came to Hawaii, I realized that Japasene girls especially Kwansei students like body contact than Korean. When I heard about this I laughed because  we like it and we often touch each other.But I think it depends on person, but  Kwansei girls really like body contact. One of this reasons is that some kwansei girls graduated from girls high school and I also graduated from gils high school. When I was a high school student, we often walk hand in hand in the school and sit on a friend's kees.  However it may doesn't matter if someone graduated from girls school because some kwansei people graduated from co-education school but they like skinship. I never care about skinship, but after I heared about our skinship, I often  think about it. Exactly, we like body contact and I think it may be little unusual. However I think Korean also like body contact. I think it is very interesting to know about this . I want to know about other countries.


3 When I creat GO, I  have five steps. First of all, I read all paragragh and understand about story. Because it is helpful to understand that what is the pattern of text ( Sequense, contrast, listing and so on)  Second , I think about main idea and what is compared. It helps better understanding. Third step is that  I find signal words because the signal words helps me to find important ideas. If we know signak word, next sentence will come in\mportant ideas. Fourth step is that underline. I always  underline of supporting ideas. Also, when I find a sntense that shows different or similarity, I underline. Finally, I start to creat GO.  I draw two circles or T chart. Actually I like to use T chart. Then I write main idea and important idea that are differences or similarities. I also use some signal . For example, →　or ＊. And then I write signal words. These are my steps to creat GO.

4, There are four questions.  First question is that even though GO is suggested as a technic to understand well , GO are questioned if GO are supported by specific empirical studies.  Second question is what type of GO  is the most effective?  Third question is that research with L2 students about GO is not enough. Finally is that most sresearches show students with  training for a short time.
GO helps to better understand about text and memory of text and structure.

Week 2

1. This week I learned Countable or Uncountable noun in TOEFL Grammar class. I have thought that baggage or luggage is uncountable noun because I thought I can count the number of bags. However these are uncountable noun. I didn’t know that. I used to say that for example: How many baggages can I take in an airplane? But now I know, so I won’t make a mistake as same. In contrast to, I also didn’t know that hurricane and storm is countable noun. I have thought that these are a kind of the phenomenon of temperature, so these are same as ice, snow, rain and so on. But this is wrong. Hurricane and storm is countable noun. These makes me confuse. Countable and uncountable noun are still hard for me but I have to know if a word is countable or uncountable because this skill is useful for TOEFL test or writing an essay. To learn English is so difficult and it takes a long time. However, to find new thing is fun and it makes me want to study more but there are so many things that I have to remember.

 

  

2. This Wednesday was Halloween. It’s my first time to spend time in abroad on Halloween. Every Halloween I didn’t do anything that special thing in Japan. I just cooked cake or cookies. One thing that I was surprised was that Halloween in Japan and in Hawaii is so different. First of all, there are a lot of costumes in a shop. When I go to shop where it is called Party City to buy my costume, there were so crowded and this shop had many costumes. I was surprised that variation of costume. But these made me excited. Also, there were not only children but also adults. In Japan adult don’t wear costume and they aren’t interested in Halloween. When I saw people who are adult and are looking for costume, I thought they are so cute. Second, on Halloween I went to Waikiki. There was crowded. There are many wired people. In Japan, most people don’t walk in the city with costume. I like Hawaii one because I feel we can enjoy together.  Japan and Hawaii was totally difference. I think it understands of intercultural. I was happy to have a good time with my friends in Hawaii.

 

3. This questiion is difficult because I never think about syrategies when I read japanese book or articles. However same as English. Japanese also has a lot of conjunctions. When I take a test of japanese, I pay attention to conjunction. These are key word to read.  I think there are many strategies to read, but now ideas don't comeup with..

 

 

4. No, but GO class is difficult for me and GO's homework too. However I think  GO class is very helpful and useful class for me, so I want to try to work hard as much as I can. Also, GO helps to understand  more, so I want to get this skill ! Now I  don't have  a question , but few weeks later , I will have a lot of questions, so please help me everyone !haha

Week 1 :)

Q1.
        . Fall Ⅱstarted in this week.  At the same time, the new classes started with new classmates. I was looking forward to see my friends and take new classes.  In GO class, we introduces about ourselves through class activity. It was very fun because I got more information about my classmates even though I already know persons. There were so many things that I didn’t know about them. I was surprised many times to get new information from my friends but actually, I didn’t remember what did make me surprised.sorry.. However, I think it was good opportunity to know more each other. In my opinion it is important to know about each other because we are studying together in the same class and same school. For example, when I want to get along with someone who is new student or I’m interested in her/ him, if I know about only their hobbies I can talk to them about their hobby. I think it’ is the first step to be close with them. I mean, I think that the more we know each other, the more we are able to be close. I was glad to have a good time with classmates and teacher at that time.


Q2.
         Today, I talked with my friend about what will we do after going back to Japan. I will go to Japan in December. I will be a junior in collage next year and start to find a job. I know that to find a job is too difficult. To be honestly, I don’t want to do that but I have to do. English is important to get a good job, so I have to improve my English skill. I was thinking that I will go to America instead of stopping to go to the university for a year because my parents suggested this idea. However I don’t agree with them because there are many risks to stop school, in other word in society in Japan, It is general to graduate for four years. I said to my friend these things and she said to me. “To study English is very important but this is not only one. There are so many people who can speak English very well, so more important thing is your personality. You can experience a lot of things in Hawaii, so you can find new thing about yourself” I don’t know if what is right but I think she is right. I can try many things in here and I hope I can grow up myself. First of all, I want to live a full life in few remaining days in Hawaii and learn a lot of things.

Q3.
       
      I think there are some differences between language learning and other types of learning. First, it really takes a long time to get or study language. In fact, most people have been studying since they were young. However even though we are studying for long time, we are not perfect. That’s why we are still learning. Also, to learn language can’t do alone. We need native persons to improve our speaking and listening skills. That’s why we are studying abroad now. On the other hand, as to other types of learning we can study ourselves. For example, when I study for exam, in case of other types of learning I can study looking my note or reading the reference book. Moreover, learning language is to make friends in all over the world. I mean, in fact I’m learning English in Hawaii now and I have many friends who are not Japanese. If I haven’t study English, I would not be in Hawaii and meet them. Thus, I think to learn language is more difficult than other learning but there is also good point. I think to learn language is more interesting than other types learning and there are not same even though both are about studying.

Q4
   
    The reason why we need strategies is that if we know the strategies, we can find or solve the questions easily. For example, I took the class, TOEFLE Listening in FallⅠ,so I learned many strategies to choose answers. Before learning strategies, I have chosen the answer without strategies. In contrast, after I knew some strategies, my score was improved by these. However actually these were not useful to get answer in TOEFLE that I took few weeks ago… I don’t know why. As for writing, when I write an essay, I think about REENS at first. I learned it from teacher and it is better to include it in essay .This strategy is very useful for me. I use this every time when I write an essay. I didn’t know how to write before knowing it, but now I know. When I write an essay, it becomes easier to image the structure of paragraphs. Since I came to HELP I have been learning a lot of strategies and these help my English skills. That’ why, I think it is important to learn the strategy. The strategy help us how to solve or how to write. We need to learn strategy.
